Our Story:
Transforming How Children Experience Math
Helping Children Discover the Confidence to Succeed
Every child is born curious
Every child is born with an incredible gift
Before they ever enter a classroom, they explore the world with curiosity. They notice patterns, solve problems, ask endless questions, and search for answers. They count their fingers before they learn to count numbers. They experiment, imagine, and create.
In many ways, they are already mathematicians.
Yet somewhere along the way, many children begin to hear a different story.
"I'm not good at math."
"Math is too hard."
"I'll never understand this."
As parents and educators, few things are more heartbreaking than watching a child doubt their own abilities.
At Life of Math, we have dedicated our lives to changing that story.
Because we believe mathematics is not just about numbers.
It is about confidence.
It is about thinking.
It is about believing that challenges can be overcome.
And it is about helping children discover abilities they never knew they had.
A Mother's Journey That Changed Everything
My name is Alpa Patel.
I earned my Master's Degree in Civil Engineering in 2002 and spent years building a successful career working with Fortune 500 companies. Through dedication and hard work, I advanced to a Research Engineer position where I specialized in product testing, technical analysis, and developing engineering solutions.
Mathematics has always been one of my greatest strengths.
But the most important lesson of my life did not come from engineering.
It came from becoming a mother.
When my son was born in 2006, my priorities changed overnight.
Like every parent, I wanted to give him every opportunity to thrive—not just academically, but in life. I wanted him to develop confidence, focus, resilience, creativity, and a genuine love for learning.
While searching for educational opportunities that could strengthen these skills, I discovered something that would forever change our family's future:
Mental Math using the Abacus.
What initially caught my attention was its remarkable ability to develop both sides of the brain while teaching children to perform complex calculations mentally.
But the more I learned, the more fascinated I became.
This wasn't simply a math program.
It was brain development.
It was confidence building.
It was a way of teaching children how to think.
I wasn't interested in quick results or shortcuts.
I wanted to understand the method completely before introducing it to my child.
So I studied.
For nearly three years, I immersed myself in learning every aspect of the program.
Then, when my son was just over four years old, we began.
The Transformation That Sparked a Mission
What happened next exceeded every expectation I had.
We started with simple finger techniques.
There was no pressure.
No drills.
No stress.
Just playful learning.
Math became a game.
Using simple finger techniques and playful exercises, math became a game rather than a subject. By age five, he was confidently performing addition and subtraction up to 99 in his head. More importantly, he wasn't memorizing answers.
He was developing the ability to think.
Learning happened during car rides, family conversations, and moments of fun. Math became part of everyday life.

Little by little, something extraordinary began to happen.
His concentration improved.
His memory strengthened.
His confidence grew.
But what impressed me most wasn't his ability to calculate.
It was the way he approached challenges.
He wasn't memorizing answers.
He was learning how to think.
He began tackling problems with confidence rather than fear.
He believed he could figure things out.
And that belief would become the foundation for everything that followed.
Watching this transformation unfold, I realized something that would change the course of my life:
Every child deserves the opportunity to experience learning this way.
Every child deserves to discover the confidence that comes from truly understanding.
Every child deserves the chance to realize their potential.
That realization became a calling.
And in December of 2010, Mental Math Abacus USA was born.
What began with one child soon expanded to hundreds.
Building Something Bigger Than Math
My husband, also a civil engineer and math specialist, helped me on this mission.
Together, we combined our engineering backgrounds, educational experience, and love for teaching to create our own curriculum.
We wanted lessons that were effective.
But we also wanted them to be joyful.
Easy to understand.
Engaging.
Fun.
Our son became our very first success story and a living example of what is possible when mathematical thinking is nurtured from an early age. As his skills grew, so did his passion for helping others learn. What began as a journey of personal growth soon evolved into something much greater.
Possessing an extraordinary mathematical mind, he quickly advanced far beyond his grade level and developed a deep understanding of complex mathematical concepts. He became the face of our program, demonstrating techniques, sharing strategies, and inspiring both students and parents with his enthusiasm and confidence.
As he continued learning advanced mathematics, he also began teaching students in higher grade levels, making difficult concepts approachable and engaging. Parents were often amazed by his ability not only to solve challenging problems but also to explain them with clarity and patience. His unique combination of talent, leadership, and genuine desire to help others succeed made him an invaluable part of our mission.
Over the years, he became the backbone of our program - learning, teaching, mentoring, and inspiring at the same time. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that when children are given the right guidance, encouragement, and opportunities, they can achieve far more than anyone imagines. Today, his story continues to motivate countless families to believe in their children's potential and discover the joy and beauty of mathematics.
Families quickly began noticing remarkable changes.
Children who once struggled with focus became more attentive.
Students who lacked confidence began raising their hands in class.
Parents shared stories of improved grades, stronger study habits, and a newfound enthusiasm for learning.
Schools noticed too.
Soon, we were invited to teach in some of the top schools in our area.
Principals saw measurable improvements.
Teachers saw increased engagement.
Parents saw happier, more confident learners.
The impact was so profound that in December 2011, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life.
I left my engineering career to dedicate myself fully to helping children.
Within a short time, our programs expanded into multiple schools, serving students through before-school and after-school enrichment programs.
And the results continued to speak for themselves.
From Faster Math to Stronger Minds
As we worked with students from different ages, backgrounds, and learning styles, we discovered something important.
The greatest benefit wasn't faster calculation.
It was stronger thinking.
Students were becoming independent learners.
They were developing focus, perseverance, discipline, creativity, and problem-solving skills that extended far beyond mathematics.
Math was simply the vehicle.
The real transformation was happening within the child.
This realization inspired us to expand our vision.
In 2011, we introduced Grade-Level Mathematics programs designed to connect mental math skills with classroom success and real-world problem solving.

Our lesson plan gained international recognition among educators.
Families weren't looking for tutoring alone.
They wanted confidence.
They wanted critical thinking.
They wanted their children to become capable, independent problem solvers.
That became our mission.

Helping Students Achieve Extraordinary Success
As our students grew, so did their goals.
In 2021, both my husband and I became Certified ACT Educators, expanding our expertise into SAT Math, ACT Math, ACT Science, PSAT/NMSQT, and college readiness programs.
Since then, our students have achieved remarkable results, including significant score improvements, National Merit recognition, scholarship opportunities, and perfect scores.
But the achievements we celebrate most cannot be measured by a test score.
They are the moments when a child discovers confidence.
The student who once whispered, "I'm bad at math," and now tackles challenges independently.
The child who stops fearing mistakes and starts embracing growth.
The teenager who develops the courage to pursue ambitious academic dreams.
Those are the victories that matter most.

A Family's Journey to the Ivy League
As homeschooling parents since 2017 (6th grade), we have also experienced firsthand the challenges and opportunities families face when planning for the future.
We carefully designed an educational path for our son that balanced rigorous academics with high-level athletics.
Through a strategic combination of Honors courses, AP classes, Dual Enrollment, AP and CLEP exams, leadership opportunities, and athletic commitments, he was able to excel without sacrificing balance.
The result was extraordinary.
He was accepted into every college he applied to.
He received merit-based scholarship offers.
He earned invitations into honors programs.
And ultimately, he chose to attend an Ivy League university as a student-athlete.
This journey reinforced what we have always believed:
There is no one-size-fits-all path to success.
Every child is unique.
Every dream is unique.
And every family deserves guidance that honors those differences.
