ISEE Math Exam Overview
Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE)

The ISEE is a private school entrance exam used by many independent schools in the United States for admissions into grades 2 - 12.

What is ISEE Math?

The ISEE includes two math-focused sections:

  • 🧠 Quantitative Reasoning – math thinking, problem solving, and comparison
  • 📊 Mathematics Achievement – direct computation and math skills

These sections test how well students can apply math skills, reason logically, and solve problems under time pressure

What ISEE Math Covers

Students are tested on:

  • Number sense and operations
  • Fractions, decimals, ratios, and percentages
  • Algebra and equations
  • Geometry and measurement
  • Data analysis and probability
  • Word problems and mathematical reasoning
  • Quantitative comparison (which is greater / how values relate)
Student Skills Needed for ISEE Math
  • Strong foundational math fluency
  • Fast and accurate mental math
  • Ability to solve multi-step word problems
  • Logical reasoning and comparison skills
  • Careful reading of math questions
  • Ability to work under timed conditions
  • Confidence in unfamiliar problem types
Test Levels (by Grade)
  • Lower Level: Grades 5–6
  • Middle Level: Grades 7–8
  • Upper Level: Grades 9–12

Each level adjusts difficulty, but all assess reasoning + computation skills.

How Life of Math Helps

Life of Math prepares students for ISEE success by building:

  • Mental math training
  • Step-by-step structured problem breakdown
  • Pattern recognition for faster problem solving
  • Visual thinking using bar models and diagrams
  • Logical elimination of incorrect answer choices
  • Accuracy-focused timed practice sets
  • Strong foundation reinforcement (K–8 math core skills)
  • Guided video instruction for concept clarity
  • Mixed-topic review for exam readiness
  • Confidence-building under test pressure

Why It Matters

ISEE Math is not just about memorizing formulas - it measures how students:

  • Think mathematically
  • Apply logic to unfamiliar problems
  • Solve problems efficiently and accurately

Bottom Line

Students who succeed on the ISEE Math section have:
Strong fundamentals + fast thinking + strategic problem-solving skills
